Cutting out the Slogan Banners

Creating the banners for the sets i chose to use a bright red as it would stand out from the background of the set and match Ikeas brand logo primary colours ( blue and yellow).

I had to trace around the letter forms first of ll which i was referring to the style of, then place this over the paper and start cutting. This process however was a very slow and time consuming. To cut the time in half i drew straight onto the red card and cut out from that - this saved the hassle of the tracing paper moving around and i could work more effectively with the layout of the text.

Cropping poster designs

Placing the running theme of geometric translucent triangles over the background. This instantly brightens up the image and creates an eary dreaming atmosphere where the horse head can be placed.

Taking the original photo i experimented by inverting parts and cropping b/w sections over the original. Over all i think the effect is engaging and creates an appropriate background for the new style of my posters.

Cropping sections 1

Above is the final proposed poster style for the set of 4 -6 A2 posters.

I wanted the whole juxtaposition of the piece to not make sense - be confusing for the viewer but because of this appealing at the same time.

Above documents trying to incorporate elements of the first poster designs of the girls sitting with tea cups. However it did not work very well as these selected images were far too bright and distracted the attetion formt the background and what the poster was actually about.

Layout of Text

Final arrangement/layout for the hand rendered text. Displaying all the information needed in the specification to promote the club night. I was very pleased with this format and it is neat and concise in a rough square shape it gives structure to the posters.

Example of placing the text of the initial poster designs.

This is how the text for the posters were original jotted down and presented. I then inverted them and placed them in photoshop and cut them all out into separate layer in which i could then play with their arrangement.

Re Poster design 3!!

I especially liked the effect of mixing a colour copy of the image against the black and white, playing with scale and the overall juxtaposition. it becomes confusing and plays with the viewers perspective.

This was another poster idea which i came up with. After my last crit the feedback which i got was not positive. Lorenzo commented that there was too much white space on the background of the posters and the overall effect was minimal and there was no reason to defend this.

So i started a new line of thought. I wanted to take location shots of the horse head being worn by an individual in public or in certain set ups. Here was one, modeled by Patrick i took these photos on the bonfire night.
Above and below shows experimentation with solid colour shapes against the original style of poster. To give variation and mix my photography against vector graphics. This is a very contemporary style currently similarly to Chrisse Abbots work, see blog!

These designs however are not as effective as the triangle vector theme which i had designed for my previous poster designs. Below documents trying to combine the triangle vectors with the minimal posters - these work much better as they match the mini triangles in the far background f the poster.

New poster design layout idea above - using cut out flesh facial skin traingles linked togther to make the background. I wanted to use this idea as it would make the viewer look twice once they look up close and noticed the flesh cut out parts, adding to the strange effect and vibe of the poster. I didnt want the poster to make sense, a bundle of juxaposted elemtns which did not fit togther.

Above shows playing around with the image layout using parts and photocopies taken from my orginal poster design. These posters could be extended to A5 scale flyers also. I like them.

Final Strangeways submitted poster design

This is the final poster design which I submitted into the Strangeways competition. Unfortunately it didn't win and someone off Vis com won. However I was still not pleased with the overall feel of the poster and its layout after trailing alot of variations.

So I set out on extending the project and started to design more flyer and poster style variations which i felt were more along the lines of my design practice - ie cutting and sticking.

Type was still not easily readable from a distance - more impact and a puncher design was needed. I needed to consider my layout more & where the text could be placed within the poster to work and combine with the images. EG, text in the balloons.
